Every bank needs capital before it can make loans. The same basic principle is at the heart of the Infinite Banking Concept: you need to build capital before you can expect that capital to do much work for you.
In the Infinite Banking Concept, capitalization means intentionally building cash value in a properly structured whole life policy before relying heavily on the system for financing. Policies designed with this approach often use paid-up additions to direct additional premium toward cash value, subject to the policy’s design, terms, and the insurance company’s guidelines.
R. Nelson Nash emphasized that people often underestimate how much capital they will need throughout their lives. Building that capital takes discipline and time, and the early years can feel slow. But as cash value accumulates, the system can provide greater access to capital that may be used for purchases, opportunities, or other financial needs.
Capitalizing doesn’t mean putting every available dollar into a policy. It means establishing a funding level that fits your income, cash flow, goals, and overall financial situation—and then consistently building the system over time.
A strong financial system isn’t built by asking, “How little can I put in?” It starts by asking, “What am I trying to build?”
