Health coverage decisions often come with a deadline—during Open Enrollment or after a major life change. But the best time to understand your options is before you need to make a decision.
For individual and family plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace, most people enroll during the annual Open Enrollment Period. In Nebraska, Open Enrollment generally runs from November 1 through January 15. Outside that window, certain life events—such as losing other coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving—may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period.
Comparing health plans means looking beyond the monthly premium. The deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, provider network, prescription coverage, and overall cost of care can all make a significant difference. Depending on your household and income, you may also qualify for a premium tax credit. For self-employed households, finding the right coverage can require a different approach than it does for someone with an employer-sponsored plan.
If Open Enrollment is approaching or your circumstances have changed this year, taking time to review your options can help you choose coverage with greater confidence.
