The beginning
How Chris Spencer got started
Chris came to Gothenburg in 1997 as an agent with Nebraska Farmer. After several years there he went independent in 2004 and opened an agency of his own.
He worked out of his house, driving rural Nebraska to meet with farmers and families across the region. As he learned more about biblical stewardship and the Infinite Banking Concept, he saw the need to take the business in a new direction and focus it on what matters most. People were receptive to it from the beginning.

Why Gothenburg
Chris and his family moved from Chadron to Gothenburg in 1997, the year he became a licensed agent. They settled here because they liked the community, and they have stayed for the same reason.
The downtown office came later, in 2024. Nearly three decades of work happened before there was a door on Lake Avenue with our name on it.

Going independent
Leaving a captive carrier in 2004 meant no longer being limited to one company’s products. It is the reason we can bring a client options rather than a catalog.

Connecting faith to the work
Chris had followed Jesus most of his life, but had never connected the financial side of the business to a biblical stewardship mindset. Once he did, it changed what he recommends and why.

Learning to plan generationally
The Infinite Banking Concept makes it possible to plan past a single lifetime. Planning generationally is the largest change in how we serve our clients.
Where it is going
The next generation of Spencer Legacy Insurance
Three generations of the family work here now. Chris’s son Jeff came on in 2014, carrying Infinite Banking to clients around his work as a vocal instructor in Sioux Falls. Kirstin followed, an Infinite Banking client of her own before she was an agent. In 2025 Chris’s grandsons joined: Jackson part time while he studies agribusiness at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and Trevor full time, moving back to Nebraska from Knoxville, TN, to do so. Theresa, a friend from church, brings years of experience working in legal firms and insurance agencies.
That is what the next generation looks like — not a succession plan on paper, but people who moved across the country and rearranged their lives to sit at this table. We are staying independent, staying in Gothenburg, and continuing to teach what biblical stewardship and dividend paying whole life insurance can do across generations.
