How Chris Spencer got started
In 1997, Chris Spencer came to Gothenburg as an agent with Nebraska Farmer. Seven years later, he took a leap of faith and went independent, opening an agency of his own.
For years, his office was his home and he spent his days driving rural Nebraska from farm to farm and family to family, listening, learning, and helping people plan for the future.
As his understanding of biblical stewardship and the Infinite Banking Concept grew, so did his vision for the business. He saw a better way to serve families—one built around stewardship, long-term thinking, and what truly matters.
That vision resonated. People were receptive from the beginning.
Small town community
Why Gothenburg
In 1997, Chris and his family left Chadron and made Gothenburg home. It was the same year he became a licensed agent, and they chose Gothenburg simply because they believed it was the kind of community where they wanted to raise a family and build a life.
The downtown office on Lake Avenue came in 2024. By then, Chris had already spent nearly 30 years serving families, farmers, and businesses across the region. The office may be newer, but the commitment to this community is not.
What shaped the way we work
Three turning points

Going independent
In 2004, Chris left a captive carrier and opened an independent agency. That decision gave us something we still value today: the freedom to look beyond one company’s products and find solutions that fit the person sitting across the table.

Connecting faith to the work
Chris had followed Jesus for most of his life. But when he began to see financial planning through the lens of biblical stewardship, the purpose of the work changed. It wasn’t just about what we recommend—it was about why we recommend it.

Learning to plan generationally
The Infinite Banking Concept opened up a new way of thinking about planning—one that can extend beyond a single lifetime. Learning to plan generationally has become one of the most significant ways we serve our clients today.
Where it is going
The next generation of Spencer Legacy Insurance
Three generations of the Spencer family now work here. Chris’s son Jeff joined in 2014, bringing the Infinite Banking Concept to clients alongside his work as a vocal instructor in Sioux Falls. Kirstin followed, first becoming an Infinite Banking client herself before becoming an agent.
In 2025, Chris’s grandsons joined the business. Jackson came on part time while studying agribusiness at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, while Trevor moved back to Nebraska from Knoxville, Tennessee, to join full time. Theresa, a friend from church, brings years of experience from legal firms and insurance agencies.
That is what the next generation looks like—not a succession plan on paper, but people who chose to rearrange their lives to be here. We are staying independent, staying in Gothenburg, and continuing to teach families what biblical stewardship and dividend-paying whole life insurance can do across generations.
