Most people spend time planning for the possibility of dying too soon. Fewer take time to plan for the possibility of living a long life—and needing help along the way.
Long-term care can mean help with everyday activities at home, in assisted living, or in a nursing facility. Health insurance and Medicare generally do not cover ongoing custodial long-term care, although Medicare may cover certain limited, short-term skilled care when specific conditions are met. Without another source of coverage, the cost of extended care may fall to personal savings, family resources, or a plan put in place ahead of time.
There is more than one way to prepare. Traditional long-term care insurance, life insurance policies with long-term care benefits or riders, and certain annuity-based approaches each work differently and may fit different situations. What they have in common is the value of planning ahead—while your health and available options may give you more choices.
If you have aging parents, or you’ve watched a family walk through long-term care without a plan, it may be worth taking some time to understand your options before a need arises.
