Few families look forward to talking about what would happen if a parent or spouse needed long-term care. But having the conversation before it’s needed can be one of the most thoughtful things a family can do.
A good place to start is with preferences. Where would you want to receive care if you needed it—at home, with family, or in a care community? Who would you want involved in making decisions on your behalf?
Next, talk about the practical side. How would care be paid for? Is there a plan in place, such as long-term care insurance, a life insurance policy with qualifying long-term care benefits, or other financial resources? Where are important documents kept, and who has the appropriate legal authority to make health care and financial decisions if you cannot?
It also helps to talk about the role family members might play. Caregiving can place a significant emotional, physical, and financial burden on a spouse or adult children, particularly when expectations and responsibilities have not been discussed ahead of time.
These conversations rarely happen all at once. Start with a simple question and return to the conversation over time. Knowing your family’s preferences, resources, and responsibilities can bring greater clarity and help you build a plan for the future.
